Forming the southern tip of the north cascades national park service complex, Lake Chelan national recreation area is accessible only by trail, boat or charter float plane from Chelan which is making it more fan. The approximately 62000 acres area is at northern end of Chelan, one of the dippiest lakes not only in the country but also Washington largest inland bodies of fresh water.
Deer bears, and marmots are among the animals that live on the mountains surrounding the stehekin valley the only town around the stehekin is in remote stehekin. Park rangers lead naturalist and conduct evening slide presentation recreation opportunities range from short day hikes to overnight camping to strenuous mountain climbing boating and fishing are popular in lake Chelan and nearby streams.
Several trail transverse the area; most follow the creek that flow into the stehekin River. A particularly spectacularly site is rainbow falls; raft trip and trail rides are offered by cascade corals 3 blocks from stehekin landing.
The national park service in that area provides shuttle bus sevice from stehekin to various trailheads during the period of mid May to mid October.
