I keep asking my self what happen to the temple of artmis at Ephesus. Should I blame it to the city that hosted it or what? A busy port of trade like Ephesus is being turned to a few shacks in a swamp.
The temple was probably build around 800 B.C closer to the river Ephesus. Their goddess Artemis dosent looks the same as was worshiped in Greece.
The temple used contained a sacred stone. The city around had became major place of trade. They decided to engage architect Chesiphronto build a new larger temple. He designed with high stone column the temple dint last for long it was destroyed during the colonial period of the Greek countries so it had to be build again with another architect Scopas of Paros. He used 36 columns to build the temple the lower portion was curved with figures in high relief.
The length of this temple was 425feet and the width was 225 feet some 127 columns was used. Currently the remains are 60feet in height, 230feet long 100feet wide and 58 columns
In 1863 the British museum decided to go after the temple the search took almost 6 years in 1869 the crew that went to serch the temple struck the base of the temple. In a 20feet muddy pit. They war forced to clear the swampand leave a hole of300feet wide and 500feet long the remains were shipped to the British museum which can viewed today.
Today the temple is near the town of selcuk is only a marshy field with a single column to remind the tourist that once their was a temple which was one of the wonders of ancient world.
